ABSTRACT
The development of linguistic competence, i.e. the knowledge and activation of rules on a structural level, is not sufficient for the achievement of communication, which is an extremely complicated phenomenon in itself, involving several codes. Pragmatic failure and the ensuing communicative gap are due to the fact that communication participants do not have a common socio-cultural background, ignore the pragmatic norms used between members of the linguistic community and thus are not able to fully understand the intention of their interlocutor and respond appropriately. Incidents of incomplete communication are often attributed to this lack of socio-cultural knowledge or to the fact that speakers cannot realize that there are differences between the cultures involved. The development of this competence requires modification and adaptation of behaviour rules to the culture of the language community involved (acculturation). The aim of the paper is: a) to point out the importance of socio-pragmatic competence and b) to present methods and techniques for its development in the frame of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) with a special emphasis on the use and exploitation of interactive video technology.
