The present study explores the pedagogical integration of linguistic varieties into language education. A teaching intervention featuring the linguistic varieties of Ioannina and Rethymno (Crete) was implemented with first-year students at the Model Experimental General High School of Athens. The study aimed at investigating students’ responses to the intervention through anonymous structured questionnaires and examining their attitudes toward the inclusion of linguistic varieties in education, including the varieties they would prefer to study. Given that speakers in Attica are generally not associated with strong regional dialectal features, exposing students to linguistic diversity through educational practices is particularly important. Although most participants (86%) recognized that all linguistic varieties are equal to Standard Modern Greek, only 57% supported the inclusion of geographical linguistic varieties in secondary education. These findings suggest that greater emphasis should be placed on raising awareness of, promoting the study and supporting the preservation of linguistic varieties through educational initiatives.
