This study examines the linguistic and semiotic construction of disability through the naming practices of disability associations and organizations (PWD organizations) in Greece. Grounded in the view of language as a social practice, the research argues that institutional lexical choices are not merely descriptive, but participate in shaping social categories, collective identities, and relations of representation. The study combines a review of research on language, identity, naming and disability discourse with a qualitative thematic analysis of organizational names treated as autonomous linguistic units. This analysis combines aspects of Critical Discourse Analysis, especially those associated with a Foucauldian perspective and key elements of semiotics, to explore the role of organizational names as condensed signs in public disability discourse. The findings show that names manifest various semantic patterns of disability representation. Some organizations use words that evoke caring/parental forms of protective representation, while others foreground rights or self-representation. On occasion, these orientations coexist in the name of the same organization, resulting in hybrid forms that combine elements of medical, social and rights-based understandings of disability. Naming practices constitute an important symbolic site where different understandings of disability and social justice are articulated and negotiated. By examining organizational names, the paper highlights an important dimension of the transformations that have taken place in Greek public disability discourse and sheds light on the role of language in the relational construction of disability within institutional contexts.
