Ασημάκης Φλιάτουρας: Πόσα και ποια δάνεια έχει η σύγχρονη κοινή νέα ελληνική; Μια πρώτη προσέγγιση

The aim of this paper is to investigate the degree and type of lexical borrowing in Standard Modern Greek. The data was extracted from the digital dictionary of Thriandaphyllidis Institute. It seems that diachronic borrowing and partial (Greek-based) borrowings (calques, semantic loans, internationalisms and re-borrowings) prevail over total borrowing. Most total borrowings come from Italian/Venetian and French. As far as partial borrowing is concerned, there is a clear predominance of semantic borrowing, as well as a connection of the categories with donor languages. Furthermore, the more recent English and French borrowings show greater difficulty in inflectional adoption, as compared to older donor languages (Italian/Venetian and Turkish), possibly due to linguistic and glottochronological reasons.
