This paper examines the ways in which first person singular utterances contribute to the formation of the speakers’ leadership ethos during the debates between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the Greek Parliamnet. Following a pragma-dialectical perspective, these parliamentary debates are defined as a distinct type of communication activity. The analysis of the relevant 2010-2015 memoranda speeches highlights some similarities in the use of first person singular by those speakers who most strongly aspire to become or remain a Prime Minister.
